Sonic and the Black Knight was developed by the Sonic Team and published by Sega. The game producer is Tetsu Katano. The leading game designer is Morio Kishimoto. The art director is Yoshitaka Miura. The cut scene artist is Yuji Uekawa. The composers of the game background music are Jun Senoue, Tommy Tallarico, Richard Jacques, Howard Drossin, Yutaka Minobe, Lennie Moore, and Hikaru Tanimoto. Sonic and the Black Knight can run on the Wii platform. In North America, the game was released on the 3rd March 2009. In Japan and Australia, the game was released on the 12th march 2009.

In Europe, the game was first debut on 13th march 2009. Sonic and the Black Knight can be played as single player or multiplayer. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) the game as suitable for children aged 10 years old and above. The Computer Entertainment Rating Organization (CERO) rates the game as suitable for everyone. Pan European Game Information (PEGI) rates the game suitable for children that are aged 12 years old and above. The menu and the character is controlled by the Wii Remote and Nunchuk.

Sonic and the Black Knight was released as a sequel to Sonic and the Secret Rings. It was intended as a second entry to the Sonic Storybook series. Sonic and the Black Knight can allow up to four players. Players can choose from 12 characters to take part in the battles. In this game, Knuckles, Shadow and Blaze will use their Arthurian swords in both forms.
According to the story plot, Merlina commands Sonic to help her to rescue King Arthur who was possessed by an evil that is derived from the Ecalibur scabbard. Merline is a wizard and the granddaughter of Merlin. Sonic's speed alone will not help to end the tyrannical reign of the black knight. Sonic must wield the talking sword, Caliburn to break the curse on King Arthur.

The playable characters in Sonic and the Black Night include Amy Rose, Miles “Tails” Prower, Silver the hedgehog, Jet the Hawk and king Arthur. After you have defeated the three Knights of the Round Table, the original characters will be unlocked so that you will be able to play them in the game.

The items of individual groups have similar icons. For example, the icon of the weapon is a sword. The icon of the armor is a metal glove. The icon of the medicine is a round beaker. Necklaces can be spotted by the pearl necklace icon. Books can be spotted by the book cover icon. Flowers can be spotted by the flower icon. Gemstones can be spotted by a gem/emerald icon. Minerals resemble an oval shaped rock icon. Toys resemble a pawn chess game piece. Food resembles a bag icon. Present box resembled a box shaped present icon.

You can send items to another player if it happens that you have their FC and they have your FC. After you have obtained an item, you will not lose its entry in the treasury. If you want to obtain lots of items at once, you can obtain them from someone that has many of it. After you have won the Special Challenge, you will be able to equip the characters with items. You will also have the ability to switch the gameplay style of Sonic and equip him with other weapons that you have collected.
