Sonic and the Secret Rings were very well received compared to other games in the series. Since the game debut, it has sold for over 1.2 million units. As a result, the developer had created a sequel to the game called Sonic and the Black Knight. Sonic and the Black Knight was released on March 2009. The two games including Sonic and the Secret Rings and Sonic and the Black Knight make up the Storybook series.

The storyline begins with the genie of the magic ring appearing before Sonic while he was asleep. The name of the genie is Shara. Shara told Sonic that the Arabian Nights was ruined due to the temptations of the evil genie, Erazor. According the Shara, if Erazor continue in his evil plan, he will become very powerful. Eventually, he will be able to leave the book and cause havoc in the real world. To prevent Erazor from completing his evil plan, Sonic must enter into the storybook world and rescue the spirit of the Arabian nights.

The main characters in Sonic and the Secret Rings include Sonic the hedgehog, Shara, and Erazor Djinn. After the genie had approached him, he decided to enter into the storybook world of Arabian Nights. At first Sonic felt out of place in the Arabian nights but he was eager to explore all the mysteries ahead of him. Shara is the genie of the magic ring from the Arabian Nights storybook. She has the ability to grant her master whatever he wishes for. In the game, the master of the genie, Shara, is the Blue Blur superhero Sonic the Hedgehog. Erazor Djinn is the evil genie that corrupted the Arabian Nights and plan to dominate the world. Erazor gains his power through manipulating the story in the book. He did this so that he could enter the real world and dominate it. Erazor Djinn and Shara are proclaimed enemies in the series and are often found quarreling.

The game has several forms of experiences including stage experience, action bonus, pearls, rings, grinding, time break, speed break, enemy bonus, ring bonus, technical bonus and mission bonus. When you get hit, your experience will be reduced. The time is not a factor when obtaining the experience so you should take your time. You should equip skills that can help you to increase experience. The longer levels will allow plays to gain much more experience compare to the shorter ones. If you defeat a boss, you will also gain a lot of experience.
